"The Fleming Clan of Scotland: a genealogical history" - coming in late 2026!
William Fleming of Barochan performed fealty to England's King Edward I at Berwick-upon-Tweed on 28 August 1296. The seal that he attached to this page of the Ragman Rolls features a fess surmounted by a bend. This is identical to the arms long since associated with the Fleming family of Barochan.
He was possibly the William Fleming (burgess of Dumbarton) who witnessed a charter of Malcolm Earl of Lennox granting Dalquhurn in Cardross to Walter Sproull between 1272 and 1286.
Between 1309 and 1327 he witnessed a charter whereby Walter Steward of Scotland granted Selvieland to Gilbert of Knock son of Uchtred of Knock. This estate was nearby the Fleming family's Barochan estate.
In 1292 he was a soldier when he witnessed a confirmatory charter of land for Richard de la Glen and his son John. A year later he guaranteed a debt owned by Colin Campbell.
An early 14th century charter records that he was steward to Malcolm, Earl of Lennox. Around 1306 he was sheriff of Lanark.
